Yup you could look on it as a layer cake
1)At the base is Linux kernel & std userspace stuff common to most
distros 2) The main distro (debian RH etc) Do most of the pacakging &
testing 3) A Meta distro - e.g. Ubuntu takes debian as it's starting point
rather than (1)
4)A meta-meta distro i.e one that takes ubuntu as it's starting point.
This ain't exactly new.
Notice how most distros are meta-distros either of RH or Debian (simply
look to see if they use RPM or APT to update)
e.g. Mandrake was a meta-distro of RH i.e. "A user friendly RH"
which then steadily forked further & further till it was it's own
distro.
Then Texstar started doing libs etc for mandrake till mandrake + taxstar
libs were a "better mandrake than mandrake"...then steadily this
ended up becoming "PCLinuxOS" which....has now moved over to
using apt but all it's config stuff is basically the mandrake
"drak" apps.
So it's not new.
