I normally boot directly into X. Is there a way to intervene in the boot

I can boot with the rescue disk and then type:

chroot /mnt/sysimage

While booted into console mode with the rescue CD if I do this:

 > cd /etc/X11
 > Xorg -config xorg.config.new

Then I get a corrupted screen.
