 Maybe you should consider the state of Usenet. Every single newsgroup is
 full of spam, and while there are valuable nuggets of info, lots of it is
 worthless drek. The one real rule of Fidonet ("Thou shalt not be excessively
 annoying") prevents this, and thus there is a better signal-to-noise ratio.
 It isn't as if this is oppressive, it's a very simple "Don't act like an
 idiot and you'll be fine."
 I highly doubt any of your users were thrown out of an echo for "nothing".
 The ONLY echo in ALL of Fido that has ever done this is Mindless Chatter,
 and that only because the regular tend to be rather... fed up with those
 who mistake it for the typical "chat" echo. Hell, I know the Holy Smoke
 echo has banned all of five or six people TOTAL in its entire multi-year
 history. Apparently, ridicule works best.
 Since most people have not even HEARD of local BBSes due to the Internet
 hype, that and the mounting cost of phone bills and BBS maintance is the
 true causes of Fido's demise. If you don't like the basic Fido ground rules
 chances are you are the sort of half-wit that it was intended to act 
ainst.

 You'll note that Apogee has not actually produced a game in some time;
 3D Realms has been doing all of that. They are two separate companies with
 shared resources and ownership.
