Found it. I also have an xorg.conf.backup. That even has:

Section "Device"
     Identifier "Videocard0"
     Driver     "vesa"
EndSection

So I moved xorg.conf to xorg.conf.badmatrox and copied xorg.conf.backup to
xorg.conf and rebooted. It still froze on the same screen but with even
more extensive screen corruption.

What else can I try?
