Thank you Sammy (and the others who have contributed) very much. 
  The _DONT_WAIT_ flag is exactly what I needed.  You have 
compensated admirably for the missing documentation.  I am very 
pleased with what I can do now from inside TSE (run a compiler, a 
previewer, a converter to postscript, and a postscript 
previewer).  After I work on the setup for a while and build some 
substantially more robust macros to run everything, I will try to 
write up the main ideas and make them available.  The particular 
macros are probably not widely interesting, but the mechanisms 
needed to run a number of extra-editor processes from inside the 
editor are probably of some general interest.
