That is already taken care of for us by Ubuntu. 

If you aren't running ubuntu (or the KDE version called Kubuntu), you may
want to reconsider. 

If you want to roll it yourself, then you need to be sure you have sudo
installed and preceed any command you want run with root privs to look
like:

  sudo command {params}

I once saw a shirt that said 'Debian, the linux your mother would run if it
was 10 times easier to use'. Well, Ubuntu is, IMO, close enough to satisfy
that quest. I had no qualms about installing it for my children and wife
who have no interest at all in whether a system is windows or linux, they
just want stable and working and easy to use. If my parents weren't in AZ
half the year I'd be sorely tempted to do the same thing, but they bought a
Dell so they can call them when Windows blows up on them.
