subject: Do NVidia or ATI make Linux driver source available?

Trying to install a Linux driver from Matrox for a Matrox P650 graphics card
this morning I hit an error message telling me the driver is not compatible
with my (very recent) X server version. I hate it when that happens.

So for which chipset makers can one say any of these things:

1) The chipset makers make source code available so you can keep up with kernel
and X server revs. (Intel?)

2) The chipset makers stay very up on latest releases? (Matrox's driver is from
July 2006 which is near eternity on Linux)

3) The chipset makers provide enough info and attract enough interest that open
source developers write non-proprietary drivers that get revved with X and the
kernel?
