Do you boot directly into X rather than logging in & then typing
"startx"?

i.e. console level is OK?

If so (A) uninstall the matrox driver & (b) set X org to a low level
std device e.g. a vga card.

An alternative if you are able to run in console mode is to su as root
& then run whatever the x config & setup prog is in RH.
