Then I hit a new problem:

Then it hung in a corrupted screen.
So then I rebooted the rescue disk. Then I read some web pages that had
variations on how to do X config. So I tried:
> chroot /mnt/sysimage/
That leaves me in the hard drive root dir. I decided to stay there and do this:
> Xorg -configure
That exited with a signal and a call stack that suggest it hit an
exception. But in spite of that it generated a xorg.config.new in /tmp/. So
I did:
> cp /tmp/xorg.config.new /etc/X11/xorg.config
Then I rebooted.
Here's where it gets weird: It booted up at 1680x1050 and I got a Matrox
Parhelia splash screen a couple of times while booting up as if I am now
loading the Matrox Parhelia driver. I now have a 1680x1050 desktop.
I still need to figure out how to rotate to portrait mode and how to enable
the second monitor to get a dual monitor desktop.
Now I hit new problems:
1) Gnome System | Preferences | Screen Resolution dialog box has Rotation grayed out.
2) Gnome System | Administration | Display brings up a "Display
settings" dialog box. But if I try to change settings there including
the "Use dual head" and hit Okay the dialog does not close and it
has no effect on the next reboot. Also, this dialog does not provide a
rotate option.
Questions:
A) How to check whether I'm really running a Matrox driver?
B) How to enable the second monitor?
C) How to rotate both monitors into portrait mode?
