Like it or not, religion of some sort has been an influence on govenrments
for millenia.  The real question is how much is acceptable (or even perhaps
desirable in some cases).

It would be very hard to elect a government that consisted only of
agnostics or atheists (unless of course its a old style communist state
where religion is banned).

Consider - why did the original communists ban religion?  It was recognized
as a threat to the state's power.
