                    WANTED: WOMEN ON THE RANGE
Did you know that women's participation in target shooting from
1989 - 1996 soared to five million participants? Impressive, isn't
it? Have you ever considered conducting a shoot at your local club
to introduce women to the shooting sports?
NRA's Women's Issues Department published the Women's Shooting
Event Handbook in December, 1997. It was edited by shooting
experts, special event programmers, and NRA staff to meet the
demand of women's escalating interest in recreational shooting. The
Handbook provides a unique vehicle for local clubs to involve women
in the shooting sports, develop new programming, recruit new
members for the club and NRA, and foster community awareness about
recreational shooting.
The Handbook explains how to conduct a half-day shooting event for
women in a variety of disciplines. It covers the "how to's" for the
event: planning, promoting, budget preparation, recruiting
instructors, obtaining door prizes, coordinating catering and
dining, and organizing child care. Two shoots were conducted last
fall to revise and test the Handbook. Every expectation was met and
the results were impressive--an average of 69% of the attendees had
no shooting experience or were beginners.
Last December, the Handbook was distributed to NRA Field
Representatives. Most of them will be coordinating one women's
shooting event this year, and the Handbook will serve as the
instruction and reference guide for volunteers. It will also be
distributed free of charge to NRA clubs, associations, individuals
upon request, state association presidents, and the Women's
Shooting Sports Foundation clubs.
