                   ANTI-GUNNERS TALK; NRA ACTS
Sarah Brady and the myriad anti-gun organizations she leads like to
claim they're "doing something" about firearms accidents. How else
to explain Brady recently taking to a podium at a Washington press
conference to announce the release of yet another "study" on this
subject. But while press conferences like these will almost always
garner lavish attention from the ever-accommodating media, they do
nothing to prevent gun accidents. And when the television cameras
and bright lights disappear, so do the so-called gun safety efforts
of these anti-gunners. Ironically, the organization which spends
the most money promoting firearms safety and has worked to bring
the number of fatal firearms accidents to an all-time low is NRA --
the favorite target of Brady and her allies. NRA has trained and
certified 50,000 instructors nationwide, developed the
award-winning Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Program, and spent some $100
million in the last eight years alone on gun safety. As NRA-ILA
Executive Director Tanya Metaksa aptly noted, "While gun ban
advocates conduct press conferences, NRA conducts tens of thousands
of gun safety courses each year. Our members constitute a nation of
volunteer educators who are saving lives daily." For more
information on NRA's firearms safety programs, please call (703)
267-1500.
          NOMINATIONS FOR 1997 NRA-ILA VOLUNTEER AWARDS
Nominations are now being accepted for the 1997 NRA-ILA Volunteer
of the Year awards. Separate awards will be given to the individual
and the organization which have demonstrated meritorious volunteer
activism in the legislative and political arenas for 1997. If you
wish to nominate an individual and/or group who went above and
beyond the call of duty to protect our Second Amendment rights in
1997, please submit a brief description as to why this person or
group should receive this award to: NRA-ILA Volunteer of the Year,
c/o Glen Caroline, 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, VA 22030. You
may also fax your submissions to Mr. Caroline at (703) 267-3918. Be
sure to include any specific accomplishments or achievements, e.g.,
campaign work, lobbying, volunteer recruitment, media activism,
etc. All nominations must be received by May 8, 1998, in order to
be considered. Winners will be recognized at NRA's Annual Meeting
in Philadelphia in June.

             HUNTING GENERATED $20.6 BILLION IN 1996
According to the 1996 Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife
Associated Recreation, hunting-related expenses accounted for $20.6
billion of revenue for that year. Other highlights from the survey
include:
-14 million people 16 years of age or older hunted in 1996 (7
percent of the population);
-257 million days were spent hunting;
-223 million hunting trips were taken;
-Women make up 9% of America's hunters; men account for 91%;
-The five states with the most hunters (in descending order):
Michigan, Texas, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and New York;
-There were 11.3 million big game hunters; 6.9 million small game
hunters; 3.1 million hunt migratory birds; and 1.5 million hunt
other game;
-The three most popular species hunted are: 1) big game (deer, wild
turkey, and elk); 2) small game (squirrels, rabbits and hare, and
pheasants); and 3) migratory birds (doves, ducks, and geese).
                        FARIA STRIKES BACK
"In the name of violence prevention, public health has incessantly
promoted a gun control agenda, based not on objective data and
quality research, but on flawed data and politicized,
result-oriented research at taxpayer's expense, to aid and abet the
agenda of those in government who seek to disarm law-abiding
citizens using junk science as a vehicle." So wrote Dr. Miguel
Faria in his new book Medical Warrior: Fighting Corporate
Socialized Medicine. You may recall Faria is the neurosurgeon
forced from his post as editor of The Journal of the Medical
Association of Georgia for printing "several [articles] that upheld
gun ownership as a deterrent to crime." His "heresy" in the eyes of
the anti-gun medical establishment and subsequent departure were
the subject of a "Random Shot" in October 1995. Though most of
Medical Warrior is devoted to other topics, Faria penned chapters
on Guns and Violence, Medicine and Gun Control, and Public Health
and Gun Control that are of particular interest. The hardbound,
207-pp., 5"x7" book is priced at $23.95 plus shipping. It is
available from Hacienda Publishing, Dept. AG, P.O. Box 13648,
Macon, GA 31208-3648, (800) 757-9873.
                   ISRAELI SHOOTING COMPETITION
The Civil Guard Sharp Shooters Association of the Israeli National
Police is pleased to announce that it will be holding a shooting
competition on May 15, 1998. Several shooters associations from
outside Israel, including NRA, have been invited to participate.
NRA will be organizing a group of our members to go to Israel for
the competition. NRA's participation in this event is an historic
first! Our goal is to ensure that all those NRA members who
participate enjoy themselves, so we've put together a tour that we
are offering members who wish to participate in this truly unique
event. For details on the tour, please call Jim Warner at (703)
267-1256.
