          Be diligent to present yourself to God, "approved":-- a worker
          who has no need to be ashamed, CUTTING STRAIGHT the word of truth.

             The interpretation of the very first word of 2 TIMOTHY 2:15,
          "SPOUDASON", gives us an excellent example of "cutting straight".
          The KJV translates "SPOUDASON" as, "Study"; modern versions, "Be
          diligent".  Hmm.  How -else- is this word translated, in the KJV?
             When you begin "cutting straight" a passage of Scripture, the
          third thing to consider is the east-west dimension:--  how does
          the specific translation we're studying from, translate the same
          Hebrew/Greek/Aramaic word, in -every- place where it was used in
          the original manuscripts?  Remember that the KJV was based on the
          Textus Receptus, an early edition of the Greek New Testament, and
          that this edition differs somewhat from modern editions.
             So, take your Strong's Exhaustive Concordance to the KJV, and
          look up the word, "STUDY".  Note that for 2 TIMOTHY 2:15, "Study"
          translates Greek word 4704.  Now, in the back of the book look up
          Greek word 4704 in the "Greek Dictionary Of The New Testament."
             Here, you'll find that the KJV translates Greek word 4704,
          SPOUDAZW:--  "do (give) diligence, be diligent (forward),
          endeavour, labour, study".  Next, look up each of these English
          words in the concordance, note all the verses where any of them
          translate Greek word 4704, and list these in a table like this:--

             What we see is that within the KJV itself, the KJV translators
          translate the Greek word, "SPOUDAZW", as meaning, "be diligent",
          nine times out of ten.  The tenth time is the one we are using
          as our case study, 2 TIMOTHY 2:15, where "SPOUDAZW" is translated
          as "Study".  The question is, did the KJV translators use the
          word, "Study" in  2 TIMOTHY 2:15, with the modern meaning, "read
          many books", or did this word convey the idea of "diligence" four
          hundred or more years ago?
             It will help us decide this, if we go back to Strong's "Greek
          Dictionary Of The New Testament", and see how the KJV translators
          translated all the other Greek words related to SPOUDAZW.  This
          is what we'll find:--

             What we see here is that, every time the KJV translators came
          to translate one of the other Greek words related to "SPOUDAZW",
          they invariably translated these words by using English words
          which basically convey the idea of diligence.  And they -never-
          use any form of the word, "study" to translate any of these other
          Greek words based on the same root as "SPOUDAZW".
             Now, we wonder why the KJV translators used the word "Study",
          for "SPOUDAZW", in our verse, 2 TIMOTHY 2:15, when they -always-
          translated it with some variation of "Be diligent" in every other
          occurrence of this Greek word or any of the other Greek words
          based on the same root?  The reason may be the KJV translator's
          impressive, widely-acknowledged use of good diction!
             If you look back at the table of occurrences of "SPOUDAZW" in
          the KJV, you'll find this word is used no fewer than three times
          in 2 TIMOTHY!  One thing the use of the word, "Study" did back
          then was to convey the idea, "Be diligent" with a fresh metaphor,
          -and- with a word which gave variety from the use of, "diligence"
          two other times in just one short book.  At that time, perhaps
          this was just an example of excellent writing style!
             If this hypothesis is correct, or if the word "study" really
          -did- mean, "be diligent" back in those days, this would help us
          to answer our question.  To test this, we need only look through
          the KJV, and see what "study" means in -other- verses!   --RLW
