the issues were multi-fold... one being a problem with my ISP... another
being some sort of corruption on my firewall's HD that caused the blocking
of most all traffic... it took a day or two to finally decide to quit
hunting the problem in the myriad of iptables rules and just reinstall the
firewall clean and then add back in the necessary mods...
