MF> I need some info/news on Star Trek 9. Can help me???
Sure thing!
>From the Trekweb Movie News site
>(http://www.trekweb.com/ST9/latest6.html):
STAR TREK 9 NEWS
THE LATEST
May 8th - Reports are coming off an AOL posting that Paramount has
registered with the Motion Picture Association of America the title Star
Trek: Rebellion. Nothing at this point is confirmed, tune in later today
for further news!
UPDATE: My sources at the studio maintain that there is no title for the
film yet. I'm working on trying to see if Rebellion was indeed registered
with the MPAA, which in and of itself doesn't mean that's going to be the
title. Stay Tuned!
May 7th - Corona's Trek 9 Page reports the following scoop about the
film's teaser trailer and apparent changes to the story's tone and
direction: "We've been told the film's teaser trailer will be shipping
out to theaters on June 1st, and tagging a ride inside the film cans of
The Truman Show and Saving Privtae Ryan; the scooper also hears it will
'definitely' be attached to the Paramount films A Night at the Roxbury and
Payback. But by the time the trailer was assembled and prints run off, 30%
of the movie had been shot so don't expect to see a dynamic representation
of the movie's scenes. Still, Paramount is putting a lot of effort into
making this Trek trailer a memorable one we're told. The film's final
trailer is slated for an early October release to theaters."
Our scooper also reports that the film's action sequences have been
"considerably beefed-up" while the comedic elements have been toned down:
'...the Riker-Troi thing isn't as integral or dynamic as you'd think.' The
scooper said it's not shaping up to be the best Trek of the new crew but
the film is the most action-oriented of the three. [Anonymous.]"
This is most encouraging to me. However, this info suggests that the
teaser is already complete. Why not make it until around this time, so as
to include more footage?
May 4th - The Flagship is reporting that the LA Film Office has confirmed
that shooting on Star Trek IX will take place May 12-14 at the San Gabriel
Dam, pictured above.
May 1st - Dark Horizons has posted the following report from Planet
Riker's source on the set:
"This news comes from the very excellent 'TC' (let's just say he knows
"all trek"): As reported in April, Prime Directive is out, but the joke on
the set is that the title will [be] Star Trek: Beyond Belief. Apparently
Piller and co. even made up a copy of the script with that title for
Jonathan Frakes (he hosts a show with that title on FOX for those not in
the know). Plenty of jokes on the set, apparently F. Murray Abraham does
pretty good Kirk and Picard imitations. Frakes seems to have won all his
battles with the execs. Chalk this one up to fan power! I reported on 20
April that the budget had probably been increased to between $65 - $ 75
million. TC confirms that budget has been increased to $70 million. You
may have heard there will be location shooting in LA on 8 May at San
Gabriel Dam. This is correct. However, TC advises me that most of the
'serious location shooting' won't take place until the third week of May.
Reportedly, Frakes and Berman are keen to get an official website
happening soon as they would like to trump all the unofficial sites."
April 29th - Cinescape Online reports that the Associated Press reports
that the unofficial November 20th release date for the as-yet-untitled
movie (although Cinescape maintains that it is called Prime Directive) has
been pushed back into December due to the later-than-expected production
start and creative differences on the set. None of this has been
confirmed, but a December release would be much better, so as to allow
more promotion time and give Frakes the time he needs to make a good movie
without rushing.
April 25th - Dr. Laura, a radio psychiatrist (ala Fraiser), was present
yesterday during the filming of a scene on the movie. Here's the report
from a listener of her radio show:
"The tidbit I heard today (4/24) was on the Dr. Laura (Schlesinger) show -
it's sort of a psychiatrist call in show. She's a big fan of TNG - even
had a small background role in one episode, don't know which one - and was
invited to the Trek9 site yesterday where she spent an hour or two
watching a scene being shot. Here's what she said:
The scene was a battle scene involving Worf and Crusher and apparently
several other people (extras?) It was a location shot because she
described being on a large hill that had a lot of grass, weeds, and
flowers. She mentioned this because her allergies went haywire today
because of that (I can sympathize). She had nothing but kind words of
praise to say about Jonathan Frakes. She reported that everyone working on
the movie just loves, admires, and respects him a lot. Apparently he is
very open with his crew and allows input from everyone. Dr. Laura spent
most of the time praising him. Dr. Laura also admitted that she knows
something about the plot but, of course, couldn't tell."
Thanks to Rogue 1701, webmaster of DeathMatch 101.
April 24th - Source(s) tell TrekWeb that the cast has been shooting on
location the last couple weeks, and today is the first day the entire cast
has been together. Reports indicate that shooting began today in the
Captain's Yacht Bay, and although shooting is commencing out of order,
guest stars F. Murray Abraham, Donna Murphy, and Anthony Zerbe have shot
some of their scenes with more to come.
April 21st - This comes from Dark Horizons today:
Trek fans should be sending gifts to Director Jonathan Frakes as a
thankyou for what he's done. Seems Paramount wanted to hold-off the
publicity of ST9 until the last minute (like they did for "Star Trek:
First Contact"), Frakes on the other hand feels that they should start the
wagon early and have a trailer out no later than June 1st. Guess what? HE
WON!!!. Expect to see the film's teaser quite soon, possibly in-front of
some copies of "Godzilla" opening May 20th, however far more likely to be
with each copy of the Paramount Jim Carrey comedy-drama "The Truman Show"
which opens June 5th.
Big deal. The teaser for First Contact was out in mid-June anyway. Now, if
it shows up in May, I'll consider that 'early.'
April 19th - TrekWeb has received the following convention report from
Saturday (4.18), which confirms that Dax will be killed off in the sixth
season finale of Deep Space Nine (as Ira Steven Behr revealed in his
Friday chat). In addition, on the Star Trek IX front, Max Grodenchik, who
plays Rom on Deep Space Nine, also claims that he will appear in the movie
as a different character:
"Yesterday, 18.4, on the FEDERATION CONVENTION VI in Bonn Max Grodenchik
(Rom) confirmed that Terry Farrell will definitly not sign a contract for
the 7th season of DS9 and that she will be completely killed off. In this
way Grodenchik mentioned, too, that he will be seen in StarTrek IX - but
NOT as Rom!" -Jens Kafitz
April 1st - The Star Trek Communicator's April/May issue #116 is out, and
with it the latest (if belated) update with Rick Berman. Let's just say
that the first paragraph tends to *parallel* the storyline of last month's
"fan fiction," among other Star Trek IX comments.
Star Trek IX is set to start filming March 30th [actually, it started
yesterday, March 31st, with scenes in the Enterprise Library]. Jonathan
Frakes will once again be behind-the-camera as director and all of The
Next Generation cast is returning for this ninth big screen adventure. In
the story of the film, Picard must save the Federation from itself. He
stands alone to protect a magical colony of beings from annihilation. His
enemies include a new race known as the Son'a - strange aliens who will do
anything they can to steal the "magic" of the colony. Picard becomes
involved with a woman from the colony who teaches him remarkable new ways
of perceiving the world.
Rick, what is the status on Star Trek IX at the moment? We are in
full pre-production [actually now into production and principal
photography] on the movie at this time. We are also preparing the third
draft of the script. I have been working very closely with Michael Piller,
Jonathan Frakes, Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner creatively trying to get
the script and the budget ready to go. We have been scouting locations
northwest of Los Angeles and also in the mountains east or Carmel,
California, near Monterey and Big Sur. We are also involved in the casting
process and have four relatively big roles to cast for this film [I
thought it was three... let's see... Anij (Donna Murphy), Ruafo, the
Starfleet Admiral... and... hmm... anyone?]. We have been having daily
meetings with a variety of different visual effects hourses to select who
will be doing the visual effects as well [actually, a month ago, it was
announced that VIFX|Blue Sky ('Titanic') along with Santa Barbara Studios
will do the effects]. With meetings scheduled every day, it's a very busy
time.
Will there be any casting surprises in this film? Yes, there will be
some surprises in this movie. We have at least one surprise that I think
the fans are going to adore. As far as our guest roles are concerned, I'm
hoping to get the best people we can. I think we managed to do that on the
last picture and I'm confident we can do it on this one.
It sounds like Picard is the focus of this film? Yes, but there is
also a huge arc for Data.
Is there a working subtitle for the film yet? No. Unfortunately, at
this time, it is still being called, in house, the untitled Star Trek IX
project.
Will you begin shooting on-location of at the studio on March 30th?
We're not sure yet but we'll probably start at the studio, go on-location,
then return to Paramount to finish up. [Note: shooting began March 31st,
on the set of the Enterprise Library.]
Will there be new costumes this time around? Some of the costumes
will be new some will be the same from First Contact. There will be some
new costume changes but not major ones.
I understand that we'll see some new ships and weapons in this film.
Yes, there will be a number of new ships in this picture but the
Enterprise is still the main ship.
Will we see new aliens as well? [Duh.] There are two new alien races
that are the focus of the film [the Son'a and the Ba'ku. The latter is not
official yet.]
The article was written by Dan Madsen for the Star Trek Communicator. The
article is the exclusive property of that publication, and TrekWeb.COM
does not claim ownership to any part of it. Go buy the magazine anyway,
it's great! This issue: African Americans pioneering in Star Trek.
March 31st - As TrekWeb *first* reported on Friday, Donna Murphy has
indeed been cast as Anij; this according to Don Granger, the Paramount
Pictures VP in charge of the production. Once again, an official
announcement has not yet been made by the studio, but according to Robnhud
47, Mr. Granger released this confirmation during a conversation with him
personally.
March 27th - With production engaging at warp speed this Monday (March
30th), TrekWeb breaks the *FIRST* hint of a guest casting selection!
Although this information has not been made official by Paramount or any
other reporting source, TrekWeb received an anonymous tip this morning
that Donna Murphy, an actress who has recently appeared in various
television mini-series, is heavily favored for the role of Anij. This
character is believed to be Picard's alien semi-love interest in the film.
Donna's recent filmography is listed below:
"LIBERTY! The American Revolution" (1997) (mini)TV Series...Abigail Adams
Day Lincoln Was Shot, The (1997) .... Mary Todd Lincoln
Passion (1996) (TV) .... Fosca
Jade (1995) .... Karen Heller
"Murder One" (1995) TV Series .... Francesca Cross (1995-96)
Notable TV guest appearances "Nothing Sacred" (1997/I) playing "Camille"
in episode: "Spirit and Substance" 10/23/1997
March 23rd - Rumor has it that location shooting will take place in
Bakersfield, California, and according to a radio station, Robert Downey
Jr. has been offered a role in Trek IX. Downey has always been a fan of
Trek and wanted a role in it.
March 17th - Captain Picard to get wet? This comes from an article written
by John Sellers in TIME OUT NEW YORK magzine, issue #129:
"A quote from the tunic-tugging Patrick Stewart: 'It looks like the good
Captain's going to be up to his neck in water. And there's nothing to be
done about it.' This was the only quote of importance after a brief
statment about saving the galaxy.....yet again, and a love interest....he
shoots...HE SCORES!!!!"
This statement would seem to corroborate certain sections of last week's
rumored plot synopsis. [Thanks to "Alsan's Rage"]
And finally today (I hope), sources of mine close to the production have
corroborated the buzz that shooting will begin in TWO weeks: Monday, March
30th.
March 17th - This report of a Patrick Stewart chat on AOL LIVE from last
Friday:
Star Trek 9: Well the mystery of the delay has been solved, yes it's
happening but not for as long as you may think. On a chat session of AOL
LIVE (Friday evening), Patrick Stewart revealed the production will begin
in TWO weeks. He also said he had just come from a costume fitting, and
said "the new costumes blew my mind." Thanks to 'Deimo2001'.
UPDATE 3.19: I have been informed that the chat was at the Entertainment
Asylum, and was simulcast in AOL's Live Auditorium. So, the report is
correct.
March 13th - Today on CNN's Showbiz Today, Patrick Stewart confirmed a
"romance for the good Captain," as well as quashed rumors of a delay
saying that shooting is "days away." Stewart confirmed that the name Prime
Directive has been floating around lately as the possible working title
for the film, re-emphasizing however that it is NOT and that the film is
still UNTITLED.
March 12th - The latest, also confirmed by CNN today, is that the movie
may not begin shooting until April. Hopefully this means that the script
will have much more time for revisioning, and that the release will be
pushed into December. However I fear that they will probably hasten the
production to try to meet the November release, thus making the quality
suffer. However the following blurb is from Cinescape Online Insider:
USA Today reports that Star Trek 9 will now go before the cameras sometime
NEXT month. Previously, the film was thought to get under way next week.
Patrick Stewart tells the paper that the next film will "have more fun and
not be as intense as the last film" and confirms a romantic subplot for
the Enterprise's captain, as was previously reported on various online
Trek sites.
March 11th - Well, the first rumored plot synopsis has arrived.
Please note that TrekWeb.COM received the article through a third-party,
one of many websites to post it today, and not one of its regular sources.
Also, the material in question, the validity of which is unknown, has
appeared on other websites and neither originated at TrekWeb.COM nor or is
it (or ever was) exclusive to TrekWeb.COM. Furthermore, any and all of the
following is one fan's interpretation of the rumors surrounding Star Trek
IX. The material is considered by TrekWeb.COM (as it should be considered
by all) to be a work of 'fan fiction' and nothing contained within it
should be taken as fact. TrekWeb.COM does not in any way purport the
following to be from the as-yet-untitled movie Star Trek IX, nor does it
condone the actions that may or may not have been undertaken by any
person(s) to obtain any materials related to the production and/or
creative development of Star Trek IX. "Star Trek," "Picard," "Enteprise"
etc. are exclusive trademarks of Paramount Pictures, a division of Viacom
Corp.:
Click Here for the Fan Fiction [Jay: This synopsis has been wiped from
all websites at the insistence of Paramount. I have not read it.]
March 10th - Ian Spelling talked to Jonathan Frakes in his "Inside Trek"
column: Jonathan Frakes cant wait. Production on Star Trek 9: "Prime
Directive" (working title) begins at the end of March
