Exactly the same as the last 3 commands in my autoexec.ftp.  Doesn't make
the modem drop carrier though.  It's a USR Courier v34 external on a
standard com1 port, if that's any help.  I have the same problem on my
other computer which uses an external Practical Peripherals PC288LCD modem,
but Portal re-initializes the modem properly so that makes it drop the
connection.
