Alan accepted an invitation to the Tidy Bowl by saying:
AH> The Big Least only got four.
They were listed just above the Pac10 (5) when I was writing that stuff down
and I guess I should have color coded the lines because I jumped one down.
AH> SMSU certainly did.
They lost early, as did ORU, and some would say that it points out to why
they didn't deserve to be in the NCAA tournament but the fact is, both teams
were very disappointed and both were sent on the road. That's a pretty lethal
combination and has often meant first round disaster in the NIT. The Big
Least got all but one home match up and the one that they didn't get was
Miami vs Michigan.
AH> CoC is a 12. How the 16th ranked team in the nation got a 12 seed is
Screwed that one up, too. I should have know better because 1st round
matchups always add up to 17.
AH> beyond me, especially because Maryland (ranked 22) is the 5th seed
AH> that has to play them. The Terps have enough trouble winning without
AH> getting stuck with such a tough first round opponent.
The committee obviously didn't feel they were tough enough. I know that CoC
plays in a lower level conference, however, they play as tough an out of
conference schedule as the Big Boys will allow. I know that the ACC has a
respect for them that they might not have had a couple of years before they
jumped to Division I and early tournaments are about the best that they can
hope for when it comes to meeting the better teams because some of them don't
want to be victims.
