WT>If I HAD to pick a rifle chambered for 7.62x39mm for use in combat,
>I'd take a Russian-made SKS way before I'd choose an AK. It's a

On average, the Russian-made SKS may be better made than the Chinese
ones, but not always. My dad has one of each -- and given my
druthers, I'd take his Chinese-made over the Russian. It's noticeably
more accurate.
I have a Chinese SKS, and while it isn't as pretty or accurate as
either of my dad's, it's just as reliable.
WT>The SKS shares ONE shortcoming with the AK series, and that is the
>sights. The best thing you can say about the sights on either is
>that they are bad, bordering on awful. If there was a peep
>(aperture) sight that could be solidly mounted on the SKS, it would
>be improved greatly. The open sights on the SKS/AK make it
>difficult to pick up target for quick, aimed shots. With a peep
>sight, once you learn how to use it, all you have to do is put the

One advantage the AK has over the SKS is the trigger. The AK trigger,
while nothing to get excited about, is at least consistent. Of the
three SKSs I've played with (2 Chinese, 1 Russian), all have rotten
triggers. Heavy, creepy, and worst of all, inconsistent.
Of course, right now if I had to grab a rifle for serious use, I take
my ROF Fazakerly No.4 Mk.I, vintage 1944 and FTR'd in 1948. It is
perfectly reliable, fits me right, *accurate*, and shoots a serious
cartridge. Right now, it's *my* perfect rifle.

Dave
