The first thing I would do if you suspect some bad rings is do a proper
compression check. This will include leak down tests to determine the
condition of the rings. A good repair manual should outline the
procedures for a thorough compression check. Breathers do get dirty and
toss some oil. Different designs are better or worse at it. This can
really be a problem if the valve covers don't have baffles under the
breathers. I recommend though putting in a PCV valve. They add a
little more clutter and vacuum hose but work much better at keeping the
crank case ventilated and blow by off the oil. I had a breather for a
while, but I found that any small oil leaks went away after installing a
PCV valve. On top of that, it got a little embarassing when less
knoledgeable freinds figured my engine was blown up when they saw smoke
coming out of the breather. In your case your engine may just be fine
too, but since breathers mostly went out of style and use in the '60s
nobody is used to how they act.
