If we're going to try to classify, I'd put the Maquis ships (which they took 
pretty much as they could find them) as more like Korvettes (WWII British 
naval vessels designed to harrass and make quick hit-and-run attacks), or 
perhaps fighter bombers like the F-18 (light attack fighter-bombers, designed 
mostly for ground attack while also being adroit enough in dogfights to 
defend themselves.)
Of course I'm not a warcraft maven, so I may be talking out of line here. :)
