DB>Our "PIXIE" seems to have stopped producing fertile eggs already,
DB>and she's only 4 years old.
Some hens wear out sooner than others. I have a female 'tiel who went
nuts one year and laid a 21 egg clutch over a 60 day period. She hasn't
had a fertile egg since, and she's only 7 now.
DB>We purchased a LUTINO female from one of our larger local pet stores
DB>and she used to stretch BOTH her wings at the same time, where as all
DB>other Budgies do them one at the time, so I wondered if that was as a
DB>result of inter-breeding.
Might be, but that's more likely a learned behavior. I bet she saw
someone do it once and liked the idea...
DB>We haven't had any babies now for several months, because all our
DB>unrelated pairs have either got too old to breed or just don't want to.
Same with my tiels--they're all either too old or never figured out what
to do.
DB>The problem here is lack of space, so we can't get any new stock until
DB>our old ones pass away, and they all look in fine health at the moment.
I'm a closed aviary here now, due to fear of diseases. I won't be adding
any new birds to my house while I still own breeding stock. I may
someday acquire one or two other pet parrots, some time in the future
after I'm through breeding birds, but not while I still have any pairs
producing babies.
