WHOSE FAULT IS THE AIDS EPIDEMIC ?
     Since AIDS first hit the national media, people have argued
over what is to blame for its spread: lack of federal spending,
willing choice of unsafe activity by members of "high-risk groups",
homophobia, or the lack of needle exchange programs.
     A survey released 11/20 at the American Public Health Assoc.
annual convention strongly suggests that voluntary risk-taking by
members of "high-risk groups" is a key factor.  Dr. William Darrow
presented research that found that 3/4 of gay males in a major gay
community in the Miami area (South Beach) had sex without condoms
within the past year, compared to only 1/4 in San Francisco.
     Darrow found that 40% of gay men over 30 in the group were
HIV+.  That may have something to do with the number having sex
without condoms.
     Darrow feels that recent reports of medical breakthroughs may
be causing a decrease in condom use, saying that significant
numbers of gay men may believe there's a cure and throw caution to
the winds.
     Of course, this research doesn't fit the politically-correct
mindset of the Democratic Party, beholden to the gay community.
