Hi Kathy,
After three years of setbacks and distractions I finally have brought a
parrot home! Or I will have done so by the time you read this. I got a
unsexed weaned baby Moluccan Cockatoo. I put a deposit down on 2/21 after
looking at the bird for two weeks at the local store. (With a GOOD
putation)
I've been referring to it as "she" as she "seems" to be female. I have an
appointment with a certified avian vet that just happens to practice right
down the street from where I live for a good going-over and maybe DNA
sexing next week. I ordered a big cage for her from elsewhere as the
store didn't have anything I liked in the way of cages and they were
mostly all a bit too small. I was using the rule of thumb that the
cage should be wide enough for the bird to flap its wings...and this
is a biggish cockatoo...so I got one sized for macaws. "She" doesn't
talk but she's vocalizing and whistling, knows "step up" and "NO!" :)
I'm going to have my hands full, but I think I'll enjoy "her." If sexing
isn't too expensive I'll hold off on a name until I know the sex. I bought
an inexpensive used cage to house her in temporarily til the big one gets
here and I'll probably move that cage to another room as a "time out"
cage if needed to isolate her for a short time.
I'll keep you posted on our progrss.
