Hi gang. The last time I filked publicly, there was no internet,
Mercedes Lackey was
still "Misty", asking Carolyn Cherryh to be in one her Merovingen Nights
books, and
Kathy Mar and Teri Lee were still talking. I believe dinosaurs also
still roamed the
earth.
AAAAaaanyway, I'm posting to clear up a confusion I thought had already
been cleared
up. Something like ten years ago, I performed a song called "Hal's
Song" at Worldcon
(It might have been Bayfilk, I really don't recall.) Teri Lee liked it
and put it on
a tape. I've been on several tapes, so I didn't spend much time going
over the
paperwork. The song was since put on one of Vince Emery's collections
as well.
Here's the thing-The song was not written by me, but mostly by friend
and fan Neil
Belsky. I added the little "Dave's not here" gag and punched up a few
lines. When
Neil found the newsgroup four years ago, he mentioned that he'd written
it, and got
flamed by people who'd never heard of him. He called me and asked me to
clear up the
issue. So I called Teri, explained the situation, and she said she'd
call Vince and
if the tape ever got reprinted, it'd get fixed.
Flash forward to...Tuesday. Apparently, Vince Emery has a website now,
and the tape
is still on sale. Since Neil's name is not listed on the page that
talks about it, he
took this to mean that I had done nothing to disavow the world of the
omission, and
was in fact still claiming the song as mine. (I should add that the page
in question
only mentions performers, not writers, but that doesn't really affect
the point.)
Anybody who has a set of Paul Willett's Philk-Fee-Non-Ee-Non can look up
that the
first time the lyrics for the song appeared (Before its appearance on
tape) it's
credited properly to Neil Belsky and Vinnie Bartilucci. So I've never
tried to hide
the truth or anything, it's just a misunderstanding that I wasn't aware
of early
enough to quash in time.
So anyway, here before God and the universe, Neil wrote the song, I only
contributed a
little to it, and performed it all over the place.
On a personal note if there's anybody in filking circles that I know,
I've married
Dorian, who I took to a few cons back when I was still into fannish
circles, and we've
had a baby girl, Siobhan Maggie, who we call "Shugie" after Shaggy's
little sister
from _A Pup Named Scooby Doo_. I haven't been doing much fannish stuff
lately, but
Neil was upset enough about this I figured it was worth coming on and
mentioning.
Thanks for listening, and may your frets never warp.
