It is NOT theory that says that water can obstruct a .22 bore, and it
is surface tension not capillary action that causes water to remain in
the bore. If the barrel is dirty and you dump the rifle into water
(completely submerged), you are almost sure that a slug of water will be
present in your bore, bulging or bursting it upon firing. Field remedy:
point muzzle down, retract the M16 bolt, shake the rifle, check for free
bore... if you are lucky enough not to dodge hostile fire when your bore
is plugged up!
