subject: JAR versus RAR

BB> JAR packs PKT-files 3% better than RAR

RAR has two major features so far unmatched by any other archiver:

A recovery record (optional, ofcourse, but great for mail transport) and
it is vertasible (as in, it can be used for any kind of file). Plus, it
has a user-friendly interface, which makes it great for newbies too.

Who has coded JAR and who is supporting it? Does it have similar
features? What OS'es are supported? Is the compression algorithm
public and does it come with source, or at least with source for a
decompressor?

BB> ZIP IS DEAD FOR ARCHIVING PKT FILES

ZIP is fairly fast and that's it. It has none of the advanced features
of ARJ and/or RAR. Plus, ZIP is *extremely* error-prone. If just a
single byte is wrong, chances are you won't be able to unpack or repair
your ZIP-file.

Yours,
Morten
