subject: CHANGING WEATHER & Parrot

RF> Greetings!
RF> Can anyone tell me how well a parrot can handle changing weather-
RF> temperature? (I live in the northeast U.S.)
They can handle GRADUAL changes in temperature. For example, if you are
considering having a year-round outside aviary, you must take at least a
year to acclimate the birds to being outdoors, and you must always
provide some sort heated shelter for them to retreat into on very cold
days. It CAN be done, but it's not something you can rush.
RF> that says "How about a tickle?") and they showed parrots native to
RF> New Zealand in what looked like cold weather conditions which made me
RF> wonder if those New Zealand parrots might be better able to handle
RF> cold weather than say parrots native to South America or parrots native
RF> to other warm regions of the world. Does anyone know the name of the
RF> parrot that is native to New Zealand?
Those are Keas. They are NATIVE to the snowy mountain areas of N.Z., so
they are used to the winter weather from the start. They are also HUGE
and well-insulated (one of the largest parrots on earth, they weigh
something like 6 pounds, I believe!), so cold isn't as hard on them as
it would be on, say, a cockatiel.
