Hi! Kathy,
I hope you don't mind me jumping in like this. We're not into breeding,
although we like to think that one day our "little people" might produce some
offspring for us as a gift. :)
BTW, we have 2 birds at present, with 1 on my shoulder as I type this...
actually he's now crawled to my wrist, insisting I scratch his head for him.
Hang on... that's better - I had to do under the chin as well.
Once upon a time, you mentioned:
KJ> I've got a pair of 'tiels like that. She goes into the box and lays
KJ> eggs, but he never touches her! He sits outside the box and sings the
KJ> 'I'm a big important male bird' song all day. They just don't seem to
This is normal behaviour for a young birdie. In fact it's just normal for
ny
male cockatiel more than about 3 years old.
KJ> get it...although I *did* catch them doing the 'wild thing' in the big
KJ> flight cage a few months back. I haven't set them up in a separate
KJ> cage with a nest box since, though. Maybe after the holidays...
Ours have the whole house as their 'cage', with a cane plant stand (complete
with a tree of sorts) that we call "the roost". It's their place in the
house, that they know they can go to for some quiet time and a feed/drink
whenever the need passes. With a previous mate, our male was known to go
through the 'wild thing' quite a few times. :)
Actually, what I really wanted to highlight to you was the seasonal
ifference
between their native environment and your locale in the northern hemisphere.
I don't know if this aspect has come up in your conversations so far, but...
their breeding season is normally from mid-winter through to spring with the
chicks ready to leave the nest in early summer. It looks like you might be
expecting something to occur that's really against the nature of the beast,
o
to speak. If you hang in there for a few more weeks, you may well be in
uck.
:)
Cheers,
Paul.
