FTP does NOT require you to uudecode or uuencode the files.
If you are using WINSOCK, a graphical FTP program is available called
WS_FTP (geez, bet you can guess what WS stands for!). Its structures
alot like the MS-Windows file sector, only larger. You get two
side-by-side (or top-n-bottom) windows full of files with a send
button and a recieve button. The left window is your drive, and
the right is the remote.
FTP has the advantage of being able to supply more information,
and you can just type in the name of an FTP site and browse the files.
The text versions are also faster since you don't have to transfer the
directory listings for every directory - you can CD to a new directory
without listing the files - and it tends to be a bit faster too.
Also, a text based FTP can operate automatically, such as through a cron
job to get files for you at night - this is how those mail servers
work - you send email to a the mail server program which calls FTP to
get the file, it then UUEncodes it and emails it to you.
A text based FTP works over modem too.
