    I wasn't aware that the kernel update had anything to do with this
    problem.  I also had problems where my dial up network internet
    connection would hang the system on disconnect.  The solution I was
    given, and it seemed to work well, was to change the tcp/ip settings in
    the network config to disable WINS resolution.  This immediately solved
    the problem for me.
