 Long shot I know, but aren't they all.  Smethurst is a fairly common name
 to the north West of Manchester, and it's my wife's maiden name.  Her
 family seem all to be from Farnworth, Little Hulton & Walkden; which is
 basically the bit between Manchester & Bolton on your Readers Digest Atlas
 of the World (or whatever!).

 Can you be a bit more specific on the Smethurst(s) you're after?  Even if
 there's no direct connection, if your bods are from this area there's just
 a chance my scraps of paper have something of interest to you.
