Bing Crosby lived in Hillsborough, CA and went to Our Lady of Angels
Church. So did we. He used to go to 7 o'clock mass, not wear his toupe,
wore his glasses, always sat in the very back pews and he sang real good.
They usually drove his wife's station wagon to church, but once in
awhile would drive his Rolls. His kids are the same age as me. Mary
Katherine was the cherished child. She hated that. The boys were brats.
MK had to work like hell to overcome who her dad was and be accepted as
a regular kid. Another neighbor kid was Patty Hearst. It's hard to
overcome when your parents are worth a fortune or are famous Hollywood
folks and it's a real PITA to try to fit in, even among other kids who
are worth a ba-jillion bucks and who's folks are big shots.
I used to love to trick or treat at Crosby's house. Their butler, Fisher,
who went to work for Prince Charles when Bing died, use to give out those
brownies that come two in a pack. They always gave the best treats.
Fisher would answer the door in his official, formal butler outfit. He's
pretty tall; their house is an old British tudor mansion; their driveway
is very long -- it was always a trip to trick or treat their house...
They were the only family that made the butler give out the treats. But
they weren't the only family who had servants. Weird neighborhood. I
couldn't wait to leave, and did, as soon as I got a driver's license.
But I digress...
