Hi, Kurt...

KW>yeah, well, i think f-prot for dos may be on it's last version...

I was surprised to see that 3.16f for DOS was released just over 3
months ago (June, 2006).

KW>the good news is that you don't need to use the latest and greatest of
KW>any anti-virus product if you're protecting a dos machine - as far as
KW>anyone can tell new viruses aren't being written for that platform so
KW>the old versions of anti-virus products should still work just fine...
KW>also, the current population of dos machines is such that it can't
KW>really sustain much of a virus population in the wild...

With the freeware version of F-Prot for DOS, and the DOS data files,
it's easier to do a scan in safe mode with command prompt under Windows.
The shareware version of F-Prot for Windows doesn't allow updates, so
the data files that come with it get outdated very quickly. But, I keep
the DOS stuff in the virus protection area of the BBS...and there is a
file there with instructions on how to set up a scan of the system via
floppy disks with F-Prot for DOS.

KW>ummm... i hope when you boot xp into safe mode you actually use the
KW>command line scanner that comes with f-prot for windows (fpcmd) as
KW>f-prot for dos is known to miss directories/files on newer operating
KW>systems...

I didn't realize that...I'll save this message to that directory, and
keep that in mind.

KW>microsoft has to be smarting that a 3rd party organization created a
KW>patch for the vulnerability before they did...

And, that makes it harder for them to "convince" folks that "Windows
is a safe and secure system".

KW>opera is a *safe* browser, if for no other reason than it doesn't have
KW>enough market share to make it a big target... we can't really judge the
KW>relative security because it just hasn't received the same amount of
KW>scrutiny as IE or FF...

My wife and I love the features with it...too numerous to mention
here. But, if a glitch develops, they fix it quickly and quietly.

KW>??? online scan only? that doesn't sound right... as for the dos
KW>version, i believe they do have something called "stinger" which is
KW>supposed to address the stuff that's actually wide spread in the wild...

I don't recall seeing that on their website.

KW>well, i still get spam at the addresses i had before i knew what to do
KW>to avoid spam in the first place (rather than dealing with it after the
KW>fact) but now that i make extensive use of disposable email addresses
KW>and web-form contact forms instead of leaving my email address on my web
KW>pages i find i don't really get spam at my newer addresses... i'm not
KW>sure any of that would help prevent spam to a domain, though...

It's real hard, as the spammers and virus writers seem to be in
cahoots with each other, to spread their "offerings". I've got the
feedback link off of my website, but the email is hidden, so it can't be
harvested. I've done all I can to avoid stuff from
"*{at}wx1der.com"...including a notice on the site that "no emails
originate from it". I just blacklist anything that comes in from that.

  Thanks for the feedback.

Daryl
