Yes, it is. The algorithm uses statistical methods in order to compute a  
probability for a message being spam. After some "learning" the hit  
rates are very good and there are nearly no false positives. The  
"learning" is necessary because there will be differences what a user  
regards as spam and "ham" (not spam) and of course in the kind of  
messages someone receives.
