There are some 'math-packages' like MathCad, Mathematica etc.
available on the market. Many of these include their own
programming languages and some even support C I think. I don't
really know much about these, but I suppose they are rather interesting
for applied mathematics. They are probably much easier to work
with compared to 'traditional' programming languages as well.
Of course, you can accomplish all of this (and more) in C, but often
it includes many 'irrelevant' steps, like using graphics and such.
Furthermore, these tasks are often very system dependent (not
portable between different machines) and not even part of the
'C standard'.
