JS>... If "R" is Reverse, how come "D" is FORWARD?
It's all a matter of sequence. The first time I got into a car with an
automatic transmission, it was in:
"P" for "Prepare yourself". I straped myself in, started the engine,
and mentally prepared myself for the experience. Then I shifted into:
"N" for "Not yet". I adjusted the air-conditioning, turned the radio
up, lowered the windows, and made sure my scarf was firmly tied, but
ready to fly dramatically out the window. Then I shifted into:
"L" for "Leap". The car, naturally, leapt forward, going faster and
faster, responding to my every whim with great accelleration. I then
shifted into:
"D" for "Drag". Now I was going really fast, passing everything else on
the road. My scarf was flying out the window just like in the TV ads,
and I was really having a great time, until I shifted into:
"R" for "Race". I must have gone really, really fast, because I left my
memory behind me. The next thing I knew, I was in hospital, with only
the keychain and the tattered remains of my scarf. That was one
terrific ride, I guess.
These days, I stick to stick shifts. I may not go so fast, but at least
I remember where I've been.
