Is this possible? I mean, surely there are jokes or sayings in Japanese
that do not translate to English, or any other language originating
from Europe for that matter.

Subtitles are probably for some but not most people. Some people find
it hard to divert attention from action to words (and vice versa) and
some just can't read as fluently. I've been living with Chinese
subtitles my whole life, and I read a lot so my reading speed is faster
than most others.

Yeah, a lot of them, probably even Totoro, have a deeper meaning to
them. And I think Princess Mononoke is the first to come out; I saw
the news doing something on it once. It looks quite violent at some
points...and besides, doesn't Mononoke mean "of Darkness" or whatever?

That sucks. Last I heard, they were coming out during LAST SUMMER!!
=(
