this problem is due to the v.8bis tone sounded by the answering modem.
some older v34/v32bis modems don't like this.
when dialing to your isp put four commas after the isp phone number.
this shold pause your modem from replying to the isp modem to soon.
so you hone number should look like this:
0845-079-8777,,,,
