For that purpose I use MythTV (mythtv.org) on a gentoo linux. If your new to linux gentoo may not be your best choice. Any way it can stream video/audio over a network to any computer/xbox in your house. Mind you, you'll need a bit more than a 400mhz machine. I'm currently running mine on a 1.8ghz amd with 500 gigs of storage. In my case any movies I buy (and yes I buy them) I rip to the HD so I can watch my movies anywhere in the house as long as I have a computer/xbox hooked up to the tv.
