The Eight Commandments of EchoMail
                  === ===== ============ == ========
(with apologies to Moses and my mother)

1. EchoMail is usually a wide-open discussion of a particular topic
either as it relates to a specific program or subject. In these areas,
you are expected to enter messages pertaining to the subject. Do NOT
place advertisements into EchoMail areas in which they do not belong.
Do NOT send personal messages to your friends, either!

2. Personal attacks and needless drivel are to be excluded from the
echomail areas unless the area is devoted exclusively to said topic
ie: FLAME or CONTROV. Even there, personal attacks are unnecessary! If
you've got something you have to get off your chest, write a private
message (preferably addressed to yourself). If it still appears
reasonable to you after 24 hours, then send it.

3. In general, most conference areas deal with serious topics. In
these areas please use your real name. It might be acceptable to the
moderator in some echoes if you use a pseudonym as long as it is known
to whom it refers. 'Handles' may be standard in some echoes.

4. Most people out here are willing to help you. However, due to the
sheer size of the community of connected systems, you are almost bound
to get several answers to most any question you pose. Please feel free
to ask more questions if clarification is necessary - or if it would
benefit the rest of the audience, but please do *not* enter a one-line
"Thank You" to each participant! If you wish to express your
gratitude, enter a single message heaping praise upon all of your
helpers.

5. Everyone these days is using diverse equipment that may or not be
exactly what you have sitting in your home or office. This reason
alone should preclude using non-printable ASCII characters in
EchoMail. Characters below the space (0x20) are not nice, since they
cause various problems with other systems which participate in the
network. These problems include, but not limited to on-screen
oddities, printed messes and system lockups. Please refrain from using
these in your messages.

6. Everyone wants to be able to handle the most messages possible
which is economically feasible (and then some), so please refrain from
placing "signatures" into your messages.

7. Every area has a moderator of record to avoid potential conflicts
with unnecessary bickering among participants. This person is not a
self-appointed God (well, maybe some of them THINK they are), he's
just one of us that is willing to take the personal abuse required to
try and help us all get along with each other.

8. The moderator of each echo should (unfortunately) patrol areas for
abuses of the privilege of using EchoMail. He should be the only one
to respond to bad boys, and normally should address these matters via
NetMail. In the case where an anonymous or nonsense name is used to
send trash through the system, any other necessary action as deemed
appropriate should be utilized. It is up to the conference moderator
to modify any of the above rules, and he should post these addenda as
he sees fit. Please don't respond to messages which should not be in
the area, that is the job of the moderator.
