Listening is very important, but sometimes serious composers, those
ivory-tower college professors that think that jazz is not serious
music, over-glorify other composer's music. They end up imitating, not
creating.
I think that listening is important, but not paramount. It's
important to have a grasp on what has been done to try to create your
OWN style/sound.
