I still use GoldWave, but rarely.  There's a little "reminder" to
register after you've used it for a precalculated $ amount.  Each feature
or function is assigned a "cost", and when you've reached that
limit (during a SESSION) there's a brief "please register"
notice.  The calculations start anew when you simply exit the program and
reload it.

I might take a look at CoolEdit.  I've heard that it's quite good too.
