Sort of like how a video camera system, focus, shutter, etc, presents an image to the CCD detector IC. Similarly we have a sort of movie running in our brains that we built up into our person. We can only run 1 movie at a time. If the brain gets sick however, it sometimes will break it apart into many bits. Hence psychosis or multiple personality syndrome and schizophrenia which is a breaking up of the self into many parts. An interesting aspect of schizophrenia is that the original personality which normally receives all the information in a single stream often becomes inactive or buried; a sort of living death or prolonged vacation. People sometimes become cured on their own when the original personality re-awakens. Such a remarkable recovery is that of the mathematician John Nash on who's life the movie "A Beautiful Mind" was based. I watched a interview with him recently and his experience of the disease was quite insightful to me as I had lost a friend to the disease and later died of cancer perhaps from the drugs.
