You mean Smithy? Anyways, here is what it says in Nintendo Power...
The final battle against Smithy is actually a whole series of battles against 
Smithy's creations totaling more than 10,000 hp(as for the smithy masks, the 
8,000 hp is their combined amount).  You will need your strongest party which 
includes Mario, toadstool and bowser.  They should be at least level 28-30. 
Welll have you beaten the first part of teh battle?  The one with the 
machines?  I mean the smelter and shypers?  Well when you fall down into the 
pit to face the masks, Mario should concentrate on the head while Bowser hits 
the chest.  Toadstool should alternate healing the party, using special items 
and bopping the chest with the frying pan.  Sound easy?  Well use Mario's 
lazy shell and Bowser's drill claw or the spiked link.  Good luck.
