In one way, it sounds like your NOVRAM write mode has died.
But if that were so, I'd think the resident diagnostic program would have 
noticed that and done something (blinked the LEDs or shown a chip location on 
the alphanumeric display).  Not being a Supra technician though, this is only 
my GUESS as to what would happen.
