| subject: | Civil parents? |
Hi Bob and Ron,
I must say I am a bit surprised by your reaction and Ron's. Perhaps I
didn't state the situation clearly. Ron writes:
-> Seems only fair; what's more, I'd require mandatory
-> offerings be made to teachers - We could set up a
-> little altar of some kind, and have a slot to receive
-> money. Fresh food would also be ok.... ;-)
and Bob writes:
-> Oh my... didn't happen to say anything about what recourse parents
-> have when treated uncivilly, rudely or condescendingly by admins and
-> teachers did it?
I suppose I should have been more clear when I wrote:
-> SK>Parents who shout and become uncivil will be asked to leave
-> SK>campus. If they do not comply, the police will be called and
-> SK>they will be charged with a misdemeanor.
I think "uncivil" and "rude" are not properly describing the situation.
I believe it refers more to parents who are really out of control and
abusive.
I know that at our school, the principals (primarily assistant
principals who interact more with the parents than the principal does)
and my department head (who fields hundreds, probably over a thousand
parent phone calls per year) have had some parents become so abusive on
the phone that they've had to say something like, "I'm hanging up now,
because I cannot continue this conversation. Please call back later when
we can discuss this more calmly." I can't imagine a case where a parent
(at least at our school) has had to do the same.
Is it just in Southern California where teachers and administrators are
regularly threatened with legal action and somewhat less often subjected
to such tirades? It's one thing if it's on the phone. At least you can
hang up. (BTW, I personally have never had to hang up on a parent
although I did come close to it once or twice. In fifteen years, I guess
that's not too bad.)
But if the parent is physically present, shouting and calling
obscenities, "in your face" and threatening or physically intimidating
the school employee, the school employee should have some recourse. They
shouldn't have to take that. I believe it is becoming more common for
some parents to behave this way (I KNOW they are in the minority, but
should a school employee have to take that from even one or two
people?), because they feel they will get what they want if they are
threatening or aggressive.
Bob asks what recourse parents have. I think it would be very unusual
for a law or policy to protect two interests. Bob is coming at it, I
believe, from the SPED background that he has, he is thinking of parents
who are not treated fairly or reasonably by the system in obtaining
appropriate services for their child. I thought such parents already had
recourse. And parents have recourse if a teacher treats them
inappropriately. They can refer the matter to the principal. And if the
principal treats them inappropriately, they can refer the matter to the
superintendent. And so on, I would suppose.
I guess it's just the idea that school employees must restrain
themselves when talking to parents, and if the parents become
EXCESSIVELY rude, the employee certainly cannot do likewise (do teachers
behave differently than that in your neck of the woods?), so there needs
to be some policy establishing that the schools don't have to take that
kind of behavior from parents any more.
Perhaps parents are better behaved on your side of the nation? Or,
teachers are just as rude?

Well that's it, it's NOT waiting before it starts the data connect tones, it
answers.. then tones.
I rember this clearly before when it was working it would start with the data
tones.. then you would hear the "fax" tone and then it would hang up... now
it dosent do that.

I know... but this machine DID work with my modem Just fine, with out
pressing any key or anything, and it still works with all the other fax
machines.

Are you shure? because I do rember hearing both comming from my modem Patrick
maby you can help us here. When the modem connects should I be hearing the
fax tones and should it be giving up after so soon?
WZ> Yup. I'd recheck your init strings then. Make sure that you have the

I just tryed that(calling and pressing 5) and it does not work. I pressed it
once as soon as it picked up, then I called agine and pressed it a few times
from start to finsh, then I called and pressed it as maby times as i could..
same thing each time, abou 2-3 seconds of a few tones, then hang up.
WZ> I can't say for sure. It just sounds like it's having problems
WZ> detecting the difference between fax and data calls. Perhaps if you
