Hello All!
One of the things that has been raised by Shelia's post about changing the
guidelines for this echo is the fact that we sometimes have some teacher
bashers in here. I guess that they are usually;
people who had a bad experience at school or
parents who have had a bad run in with one of their childs' teachers for
whatever reason or
parents who, because of ignorance of the administration or the curriculum
thinks that teachers are incompetant. (These ones think they can do a better
job themselves.
One doesn't need to be trained as a teacher to be apt to teach. However one
who teaches in a school should have a philosophy about education and about
how children learn as well as knowledge and understanding of curriculum.
There are those who belive the role of the school is to teach only the core
curriculum (ie maths, literacy, science, social science, the arts, health and
physical wellbeing) There are others who add the social and moral dimension
while there are those who say it is not the role of the school to teach
values and manners to the school.
I personally think that teaching morals, values, and manners is primarily the
function of the family BUT we have many students in schools who come from
backgrounds which have morals and values that differ from that of the school
and there are some behavioural expectations that need to be taught before
curriculum delivery can be effective.
The following two messages elevate the notion of education from a teaching
and learning plateau to a much broader concept.
Perhaps they will provide something from which a number of threads can be
started.
Cheers
Chris
