I'm not a TC, nor do I play one on TV (grin), but I do have a couple of
friends who do work for local school districts. One is/was a TC, the other is
Head of DP for the entire district. (they don't work for the same district,
by the way) Since no one else has replied, I'll do so based on observations
of/discussions with, my friends.
SA> I just had a stint with a school system. Hired as a
SA> TC, I ran into a phenominal
SA> attitude that since I had a degree in Computer Science
SA> then I should be expert
SA> on all software, all platforms, on the internet, all
SA> software including Novell
SA> Networking, and should be able to teach the school
SA> system anything at any time.
Yeah, that's the normal attitude of most of the teachers and all of the
administrative types.
It's also not limited to school districts. ;-)
SA> I was also directed to write grants, support all AV, purchase computers,
SA> generate budgets, and to work for two different
SA> principals in two buildings.
Assuming this wasn't in the job description; most districts here have a
separate person to write grants, and another person/dept. for non-computer
gear. Having two bosses is a management no-no in any field, in my opinion.
SA> Now that I have found a teaching position, with more
SA> than a 25% pay cut, in
SA> different school system, I watch the TC as he goes though a very similar
SA> gauntlet. In his case, he is more experienced and is
SA> earning much more than I
SA> was. I still see teachers and administration expecting a panacea to
ork
SA> technology into their teaching schemes, to be saved by
SA> the internet, and when
SA> the idea fails, blame it on the TC.
What many school districts fail to realize, (especially the smaller to middle
size ones and/or those experiencing rapid growth) is that they need a 'data
czar' with central control/authority; and TC's for each school.
They need to have two sets of people; those who supply/oversee the
infrastructure, and those who work with the teachers to help them accomplish
all sorts of neat things with it.
SA> What is my point? Are you treating your TC in a way
SA> that is destructive? The
You are if you hire ONE person, and then expect them to do the work of two or
three people, or even a whole department.
SA> individual is a human with real feelings that wants to do a good job.
Most people do want to.
