My district is thinking of installing an academy
setup based upon themes or career paths into our
high school. The idea is to reduce the movement
of 3000 students grades 10-12 by having 200-300
students stay pretty much in one spot in the
school. It's hoped that instruction will be
cross-curricular, and employ team-teaching.
What I'm interested in is whether anyone is at
all familiar with this kind of program? Does it
work? Any problems with it? What kind of
training was provided for teachers?
Secondly, since in NY we have fixed curriculum
in most high school courses (which is handed down
by the state) would that cause problems for this
kind of program? I have some doubts about this
idea, but nothing to hang my hat on.. Comments
appreciated; experience REALLY appreciated! ;-)
