Here's something from another echo that may shed some light on the
"drop" messages:

"Some off line mail doors/readers allow a BBS caller to add to or
subtract from their queued selection of conferences by sending a message
within given conference with either the words 'ADD' or 'DROP' in the
subject line and/or message body, depending on what they want to do.
When they up load their *.REP packet the changes will take effect.
Unfortunately the QWK mail door more often than not puts these ADD/DROP
messages into the stream."

I dimly recall using a mail door/reader combo that allowed that but it
was awhile back.
